Trying To Become A Morning Person

I’ve been told (and read) my whole life about how the highest achievers in life are morning people. I’ve never been much of a morning person, the earliest I’ll wake up without an alarm clock is around 7 AM.

The rich people seem to be early risers so they MUST be onto something…

This year I decided to really give the 5 AM wake-up a try and push myself to wake up early and start my day at the gym instead of going to the gym with the 5 PM traffic after work.

Okay, I don’t wake up at 5, it’s more like 5:30 AM, but it’s a whole hour before my usual wake up for the work week. I now wake up, brush my teeth, and head to the gym.

I was actually pleased to see the number of people already jogging in the neighbourhood then. The gym is quite a distance away from where I live but close to work. This is why I decided to go to the gym in the mornings instead of late afternoons because it’s in the opposite direction from home.

My new routine has been quite an adjustment as it means forcing myself to go to bed way earlier. I now spend less time bingeing on Netflix because I have to be up early.

The decision to join the 5 AM club stemmed from my need to create a better life for myself. I have goals that I’m serious about achieving this year and the only way to get more time out of the day is to wake up earlier. Heading to the gym first thing in the morning gives me more time in the early evenings to work on other things.

Being at the gym that early is flipping amazing because there’s hardly anybody there.

I did crash about about 2.30 in the afternoon the first few days and tried to eat sugar for energy.

How was your journey to becoming a morning person or have you just always been one?

  1. Well done you for sticking to your new routine. I have always tried to be an early riser and begin the day on a positive note, sometimes it doesn’t happen. I have a teenage daughter who would lie in bed all day if I let her. My body clock at the weekends doesn’t let me lay in so I get her up too haha.

  2. I was never a morning person. But then I decided to wake up at the same time each day, regardless of what time I go to bed. That’s helped me tremendously in getting this routine going. Great to read your journey on it!
