Creative Corner: Fadz Behardien – The Curvy Journal

Welcome to my blog – Weird & Liberated where it’s encouraged to be your authentic self!

Glad you could join us on “Creative Corner” today. I have a lovely young lady for you to meet…

Say howdy to FADZ!

She is the visionary behind The Curvy Journal, a Capetonian (from Cape Town, South Africa for those of you who aren’t familiar with the term), a foodie, a radio personality as well as a huge supporter of the Body Positive Movement.

Fadz started The Curvy Journal in 2016 to connect with everyday plus size women.

Here’s what Fadz had to say:

Fadz creator of The Curvy Journal

What inspires you to write/blog and where do you get your ideas from?

My passion about bringing up issues regarding body positivity and plus size we talk amongst friends but too shy or scared to talk about openly, that coupled with my personal struggles inspires me to write.

What is your writing process, do blog posts come easily to you or do you spend lots of time on each one?

When I started my blog topics and ideas came easily and frequently to me. Lately though, due to personal issues, I’ve hit a bit of a creative block. That being said, I do still very much do enjoy the planning process, brainstorming and styling leading up to what I write.

How would you describe yourself?

I’d describe myself as a quirky, outgoing human, with a sometimes loud, sometimes shy side. Oh and very awkward, LOL!

What is your biggest fear?

Being verbally bullied in my younger years, my biggest fear (when it comes to my blog) is people not liking me in person…HA! Never said that out aloud.

Slowly I’m getting over it though because if there is one thing I’ve learned since starting the Curvy Journal, is that not everyone is going to like or agree with what you have to say. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

How do you de-stress after a long day?

To de-stress I sing or binge-watch an episode or 2 of whatever series I feel like.

What’s your favourite movie?

My sister and I grew up going to the cinema, she went on to go and study film. Because of this, we both have a deep appreciation for Cinema, so pinpointing just one movie is super difficult.

But if I have to pick one, I’d say The Big Lebowski.

What is your day job and what is your favourite thing about it?

My day job is working in social media, I also host a show on an online station, 2 Oceans Vibe Radio. I’ve always enjoyed talking, but putting together a show is on another level of excitement.

From doing the research, organizing guests to come in for interviews, to compiling your playlist and the interactions from listeners. Finally sitting behind a mic and seeing it all come together gives me a thrill I cannot begin to explain.

What do you do to keep fit?

To keep fit, I enjoy going to the gym during the week and for a run on Green Point Promenade on weekends.

What is your favourite book?

Sadly, I am not a big reader. However, I recently read Hunger by Roxane Gay.

What is the most difficult challenge you’ve ever had to overcome and how did you overcome it?

When I was 13 years old I was diagnosed with a rare inoperable brain tumour.

Because of this, my weight is out of my control. This coupled with some other life events lead me to start the Curvy Journal. But there are times when I question myself because I constantly worry about what others think of my outer appearance.

Luckily, I have an amazing support structure (family and friends) who always have my back.

Whenever my mind goes astray, I can always count on a little pow-wow session with any of them to help me overcome any insecurities and snap me out of any doubts filling my mind. I am truly blessed.

A big thank you to this brave young lady for being such a great guest.

I wish you all the best. It’s been a blast getting to know her and introducing such a lovely and strong young lady to you guys. A great inspiration to us all!
