Healthy Eating Tips

Limit your intake of highly processed food

According to an article on Health and Stroke, highly processed food is food that is “changed from their original food source and has many added ingredients”.

Highly processed foods are bad for you because they contain unhealthy levels of sodium, fat and sugar. Even though these ingredients make food taste oh so good, too much of them leads to health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease as well as obesity.

Try to include all the food groups in every meal

The food from each of the 5 food groups has its own functions in the body and it’s important to eat from all food groups to follow a healthy, balanced diet and reap the benefits of all of them.

The 5 food groups are:

  • carbohydrates (carbs)
  • diary
  • fats & oils
  • protein
  • fruits and vegetables

You can see from the screenshot image above the benefits of each food group.

Tip: to get more protein into your diet you can add protein powder to your soups and smoothies. Try Whey Protein Powder.

Plan your meals

It’s easier to stick to a healthy diet if you plan and prep your meals in advance.

If you’re a busy person you can cook extra and freeze and reheat when you get hungry.

When it comes to lunch, make lunch at home and take it with you to work. Be sure to add a piece of fruit to snack on at work or school during the day.

Planning your meals will also make grocery shopping easy for you because you’ll go to the grocery store already knowing what you need.

Watch your portions

Portion sizes are important to ensure that you’re eating the right amount of each nutrition group.

You can use your hand to check that your food portions are the correct serving size, well amount.

According to some articles I’ve read, this is roughly how much you should be eating per meal:

Protein – a palm-sized amount

vegetables – a fist-sized amount

Carbohydrates – a cupped hand

Fats – thumb-sized portion

Drink plenty of water

You should always start your day with a glass of water!

It is recommended that we drink 2 litres of water a day; which is equivalent to 8 glasses.

I have a 2-litre bottle that I fill every morning and try to make sure is empty by the time I go to bed at night. I don’t always manage to finish it but it’s okay because the tea I drink during the day also counts towards my water intake.

Water is important as it helps to clean your system naturally by flushing out waste, keeps you hydrated and makes your skin look beautiful (among other important things).

If you’re not much of a water or tea drinker, eating water-rich food such as watermelon, strawberries, peaches, oranges and cucumber, also counts towards your water intake.

If you can’t drink your water, eat it!

Drink a glass of water before meals

This helps prevent overeating and help with portion control and aids in digestion.

Do this about half an hour before you eat.

Snack on fruits and veg

When it comes to snack time, instead of going for sweets and chips rather grab a piece of fruit or nuts. Fruit will give you natural sugar if you have a sweet tooth and is packed with important nutrients your body needs to function.

For healthier snack options try going for kale crisps instead of your regular crisps next time you go to the grocery store. Dried fruit is also another option.

Fresh fruit and vegetables are always better though.

If you enjoy smoothies and shakes then you can make your own at home using fresh fruits and vegetables.

Personally, I find these delicious. I like to blend green veg and fruit for example kale and apple/orange. The fruit gives the smoothie that sweetness I like.

Add vegetables to every meal

Every meal you eat should contain at least 1 vegetable. The more the better.

Your serving of green leafy vegetables should be roughly the size of your fist. In your vegetables, you should also include green leafy veg such as spinach.

Grow your own vegetables

If you grow your own food then you’ll know exactly what went into producing it.

We are being sold many genetically modified products which some believe are actually detrimental to our health.

Your home garden doesn’t even need to be big and vegetables like tomatoes and lettuce are actually quite easy to grow.

Cook your own meals

Avoid eating out and eating fast food often. Cooking your own meals allows you to control precisely what you put into your body rather than ordering ready-made meals from your local fast-food chain.

Home-cooked meals also tend to have fewer calories provided you cook them properly and don’t drench your food in oil.

You can find healthy meal ideas on Pinterest if you’re looking for new meal ideas and cooking tips.

Use an air fryer

This is now my favourite kitchen appliance because you can cook just about anything with it.

I have yet to find food I cannot cook using an air fryer!

I personally love it because I still get to eat all of my favourites such as fries and burger patties but have them cooked in a healthier manner.

No need to add any extra oil, not even to meat and the food tastes so good and you can obtain the perfect level of crispiness without having to deep fry.

If you do not own an air fryer, go buy one now!

To conclude, applying these healthy eating tips will improve your overall health and help you to look and feel better.

You should be creative with your meals and play around with different ways to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your diet daily.

A healthy and balanced diet is key to overall health. For those of you who are exercising, you will not see the results you want if you’re eating crap.

If you hate working out, here’s what you should do!

Food is fuel for the body, if you want your body to function optimally, then you gotta fuel it with the right stuff.

Here’s to healthy eating!
