Welcome back to the blog.
If you’re following me on Instagram, I’m sure you’ve noticed I’ve been promoting gear by OJDesigns By Onela Joni, a local designer and friend, so I’d like to talk to you a bit about why we should all be supporting local brands.
It’s super important for us to push and promote small businesses and local brands for a variety of reasons, some of which I’ll be sharing with you in this post.
WHY YOU HAVE TO SUPPORT LOCAL BRANDS:
To boost the local economy
According to the Memphis Chamber blog, the cycle of locally spending and creating wealth creates a strong local economy; which is beneficial to the entire community.
Boosting the local economy is very important because it leads to my next point,
Creates local jobs
This is especially important since so many people lost their jobs during the pandemic and buying locally can help ensure that local businesses can continue to operate.
If we help these smaller local businesses to grow, it will lead to job creation and more people will be absorbed into the labour market.
Job creation is vital as it helps lessen this strain on government relief funds as fewer people will be relying heavily on them to sustain themselves.
Creates local wealth
Buying locally ensures that money is circulated within the local economy (bizcommunity.com) thus leading to local wealth creation.
Help make someone’s dreams come true
Imagine how good it’ll make you feel knowing that YOU helped make someone else’s dreams come true.
Here are a few local brands that have piqued my interest that you just have to check out (some of which I just stumbled upon on Instagram):
LINALINA (luxury sleepwear)
I actually discovered the Cape Town-based SELFI quite recently on Instagram.
If you’re looking for cool, stylish and casual, everyday streetwear then go and check these brands out on Instagram. Follow luxury sleepwear, check out LINALINA and if you’re looking for more high-end fashion then Selfi is the one.
Follow the ones you fall in love with!
No, I am NOT an affiliate nor do I get anything from these brands. I’m simply just sharing some stuff I liked on Instagram. Hey, maybe you’ll like it too…
How You Can Support Local Business & the Brands Above
- like and follow them on social media
- share their posts and goods they offer on your social media
- buy from them to show your support
- posts pictures of yourself purchasing or wearing their products and tag their pages
- leave positive reviews
And the best part is you can show your support even if you can’t afford to buy their products!
By the way, stop this thing of being jealous of other people’s growth and success. Work hard on your own shit and your time will come. It takes nothing from you to support your friend’s or neighbour’s brand and help them to grow.
After reading this, I’m sure you can see why supporting your local brands is such a brilliant idea and I hope you’ll go and follow the pages above (and make a few purchases while you’re at it). Besides, it is especially important for us as South Africans, given the unemployment rate, that we help local businesses to thrive and help to decrease the levels of poverty and unemployment in our country.
The more jobs are created, the more of the labour force gets absorbed into the labour market thus decreasing the number of people who are jobless.
Tell me which of these local brands is your favourite.
Furthermore, there are dozens more cool and fashionable local brands out there so please share your faves in the comments so that we can go check them out!
