A hobby is something you do for fun in your spare time.
There are so many great hobbies you can choose from depending on your interests.
I’ve recently decided to start gardening so I can spend more time getting fresh air outside and I find it relaxing. I’m also interested in growing my own fresh vegetables as a way to eat healthier.
I tried growing avocados before I left for Cape Town and sadly all of my pits are now dead because no one remembered to water them while I was away lol.
It’s such a great feeling to watch something you started, come to fruition!
Great Hobbies To Start

Reading
I’ll always advocate for reading! It’s one of my favourite hobbies as you may have picked up from previous posts and it’s one hobby that will never grow old.

I read every day now unless I’m out with friends but I’ve found that the best time for me to read is in the morning when there are fewer people around and fewer distractions.
There’s a nice spot on the veranda that gets just enough sunlight which I find perfect for reading.
Writing/Blogging

If you’re a creative person with a flair for words then writing or blogging is just for you.
For me, it’s a great hobby as it helps me to destress and I’ve enjoyed writing since high school but blogging was something that came MUCH later.
There are money-making opportunities in blogging and writing if that’s what you want or you could do it just for the fun of it.
Some careers for writers:
- editor
- journalist
- copywriter
- screenwriter
- speechwriter
- novelist
- content marketing manager
There are dozens; which makes me wonder why I never discovered that I wanted to do this sooner. But hey, it’s not too late.
If you’re good at writing then you should start honing your talent, maybe take a few free courses.
Who knows, you could be sitting on the next best seller?
Vlogging
Aka video blogging.
If you’d prefer to use a camera instead of writing then vlogging would be ideal for you.
Vlogging is a form of video format content creation using platforms such as YouTube, Tiktok and Instagram.
You don’t need to have fancy recording equipment to start, you blog using your smartphone.
What’s great is that signing up to these vlogging platforms is free.
Sewing, Knitting or Crocheting
We were taught how to sew and knit in primary school and I must say, sewing is a handy skill to have because I can mend my own clothes.
It’s fun to sew, knit or crochet as a hobby (I’ve never crocheted) and I find it so relaxing. It’s great doing things with your hands.
Exercising
I’ve been doing the Chloe Ting 2019 Summer Shred with my buddy and I’m having so much fun completing the workouts, I can just feel myself getting fitter and stronger by the day.
Exercising and reading are my favourite hobbies.
You should get into exercising as a hobby and lifestyle because it’ll keep you in shape and it just melts the stress away.
If you’d prefer not to do it alone, find a group to join and make some new friends.
Gardening
As mentioned at the beginning of this post, I’ve just started gardening.
We had a great garden growing up where we grew fresh spinach, tomatoes, etc, and we were eating fresh, healthy vegetables straight from the garden.
This month, I was bored in the house so I just decided to go and give our strawberries and onions some attention (ended up planting more onions) because the garden was starting to overflow with weeds.
I’m telling you, nothing tastes better than fresh vegetables.
To be honest, gardening is not as difficult as I used to think it was when I was younger, anyone can do it. You don’t need to have special farming knowledge, you’ll learn a lot along the way and besides, there’s the internet to help you with stuff.
I started gardening my own vegetables because I was concerned about all the chemicals and growth hormones that go into the mass production of food. It’s so much fun and the end product is delicious.
Photography or Videography
If you’re a visual person with a great eye then photography and/or videography is just for you.
I love taking pictures but I’m still working on my photography skills.
If you’re serious about photography then you should invest in some good photography/videography equipment and start your own little side hustle.
There are always events and people want to capture special moments so there is some money-making potential there.
Hobbies that can earn you some cash are always a great idea!
Who knows, it may turn out to be your dream career.
This is especially important during these difficult times when people are struggling with employment.
Play a sport
Playing sports is a great form of exercise and is perfect for those who hate hitting the gym.
I’m sure there’s a sports club in your area that you could join, you might even end up making some new friends with similar interests.
If you’re not one for team sports then there are individual sports for you to have a go at.
Playing sports is beneficial as it helps you to sleep better, keeps you in shape, builds leaders and helps you to fight stress among other things.
Sports is also great for kids as it teaches them valuable life skills such as teamwork and can help keep them off the streets and out of trouble.
Even if you’re a working professional, you need a hobby outside of work that you can do in your free time to just relax and have fun.
I think that way too many people work from 9 to 5 during the week and then spend their weekends drinking until it’s time to go to work again. Not that it’s any of my business but I think more of us need to find positive hobbies.
If you’re looking for a new hobby to try, give some of these mentioned in this post a shot. You might find something you thoroughly enjoy.
Whether you’re a creative and visual person or you’re into health and fitness, whatever your interest is, there’s a hobby out there suited just for you. the best thing to do is try a bunch of different ones and discover what you like.
